Lech Austria – Shhhpegetti and Skiing

Your probably wondering about the title and  if Nick has been drinking and writing again.  Although I am a little delirious after the Easter feast we just had,  I misspelled Spaghetti because this was how our Austrian friends pronounced it.  This still cracks us up today whenever anyone says spaghetti…  we don’t get out much.  Anyways now that that is all sorted out, onto the trip.

This past winter season we promised ourselves that we would test our skiing skills on the Alps.  The birthplace for skiing.   Trying to pick a particular location is very imposing because there are hundreds of different world class skiing locations stretching from France to Slovakia.  We decided on Lech after a lot of research and recommendations from friends.  It didn’t disappoint.  It was everything we were hoping to experience… a winter wonderland in the Alps.  We stayed at a place called Das Georg in town.  Very cool ambiance (Log cabin vibe) and being a smaller place we felt like family with the owners, who cooked us dinner a couple of the nights along with random treats (Strudel!! ) through the stay.  Also the breakfast spread every day was clutch.  We needed all that energy for our adventures.

Alps skiing was something new for both of us.  Myself learning my skiing skills on the mean slopes of Michigan (consisted of a place called Mt. Brighton, which was a former landfill that they created a ski slope on.. no joke)  and Jessica the treacherous bunny slopes of California/Idaho.   We were a bit intimidated when we arrived to town.   You are literally surrounded by looming mountains with ski pistes everywhere.    We eventually found our course (with the Austrian 6 year olds 🙂 ) and the skiing was great.  The best part about it were the pit stops.  Along the runs there would be a chalet where you could stop for some beer and schnitzel!   Speaking of schnitzel lets jump to the photos and food.

The soup at the restaurants in town was great! With all the cold days….They know how to make soup. This was called a “Vienna Pot”

We finally ordered the infamous shhhpegetti at our hotel. The owners at Das Georg asked us if we wanted some everyday. It was surprisingly good for some Italian food snobs from Sicily.

Exactly what I want after a day on the slopes… an immediate “Snacky”

We had a great dinner at a place down the street called Hotel Gotthard. All the hotels doubled as solid restaurant locations. Each with cozy log cabin environments and complimenting menus.

Apple Strudel was a hit this trip. Definitely a popular treat in the area.

There was loungy places available too. Got my first dirty martini in Europe that I was able to drink. Usually they put wayyyy too much vermouth. This was at a place called Fux. (With a name like that you can see that they aren’t worried about offending too many Americans)

All over town there are these little meat & cheese places, where they produced all their own goods.

They take hunter sausages very seriously here!! In Michigan there are only 2 choices at the store… in California store clerks would look at me cross eyed when I would ask where the hunters sausages are.

Lech has these cool little restaurants like Hus Nr. 8 where everyone stays warm inside with the schnapps and hearty food.

The owner at the hotel told us to get the porterhouse. We had no idea that it was going to be a big production with its own table and sliced for us!
